ISSUE 12
Emerging out of the pandemic, we are faced with an epidemic of loneliness and isolation that perhaps was only exacerbated by the global lockdowns. The urgency with which we are in need of community, togetherness, teamwork, and an overall sense of belonging, is what ISSUE 12GETHERNESS responds to. Aside from the inexhaustible list of nourishment which art can bring to our daily lives, it is also uniquely capable of reminding us of a fundamental human truth: we’re all on the same team.
Alongside our stylized coverage of global artists in the visual and performing arts, we chose to clear a contemplative space to investigate how the work artists do can facilitate a recovery from isolation.
Join us on our twelfth orbit around the artistic universe as we return to nine of our bespoke interview series from previous issues. We also launched our jazz series, ELLINGTON, with Samara Joy and Julian Lage, and revamped our theatre series under a new name, FOURTH WALL. Along the way, we dance and sing with our cover artist, Jason Mraz, as he celebrates his latest album.
Elsewhere in music, we are joined by Mexican singer-songwriter Silvana Estrada; the multi-talented (and proudly Canadian) Rufus Wainwright; and talk to alt-folk artist Jenn Wasner about her multiple creative outlets. Our multi-issue coverage of Ukrainian artists continues with the Oscar nominated filmmaker Alexander Rodnyansky, as he reflects on resistance cinema in Ukraine and Russia alike.
